What is an optometrist?

An optometrist is an eye doctor who is trained to manage any and all eye diseases that do not require immediate surgical intervention as well as prescribe glasses and contacts. Some common conditions optometrists are well-equipped to manage include glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, dry eye, pink eye and other eye infections, eye injuries, and foreign bodies stuck in the eye. In cases where these conditions become more severe and require surgical management, optometrists maintain friendly relationships with local ophthalmologists (eye doctors trained in surgery) and can refer their patients to the appropriate specialist.
